From ‘Survey of the Sussex Estate Belonging to the Earl of Ashburnham’      by E Driver 1830 (ASH/1173)

The Almshouses

“Near the foregoing are the Almshouses for six widows – comprising six neat, newly erected dwellings, all brick built and tiled containing two rooms with a lean to washhouse to each  - a bakehouse behind the houses for the joint occupation of the tenants who reside therein rent free and have an annual allowance of firewood. There is a cowshed, timber built and thatched.”

Almshouses, Ashburnham
